Withdrawable vs Trading Credit: The Crypto Bonus Difference That Costs You
You claim a bonus, you see a number land in your account, and you assume it is yours. Then you try to withdraw it and the exchange says no. This is the single most misunderstood thing about crypto welcome offers, and it is the difference between a reward you can spend and one you can only gamble with.
What the two words actually mean
Withdrawable cash is exactly what it sounds like. Once you meet the conditions, it is real balance you can send to your wallet or bank. It is rare on welcome offers, and when it exists it is usually small.
Trading credit goes by a dozen friendly names: bonus funds, trial fund, coupon, voucher, mystery box, position airdrop. They all mean roughly the same thing. You can use the amount to open positions or offset fees, but you cannot withdraw the credit itself. In many cases you keep only the profit you make while using it, and only after hitting a trading volume target.
How to tell which one you are getting
You do not need to guess. The wording gives it away almost every time.
- •If the terms say withdrawable or cash, it is the good kind. Assume nothing until you see those words.
- •Mystery box, coupon, voucher, trial fund, bonus funds: trading credit, not cash.
- •Position voucher or position airdrop: leveraged trading credit, often capped, usually with a volume requirement.
- •A note like the voucher can only be used to offset trading fees means it is a fee rebate, not spendable money.
Why exchanges prefer credit
Credit keeps you trading on the platform, and the exchange earns fees every time you do. That is the entire economic logic of the welcome bonus. It is not a scam, it is marketing, but the marketing works by showing a big cash-looking number that is really a trading incentive.
Is trading credit still worth claiming?
Often yes, if you were going to trade on that exchange anyway. Free credit that lets you open a position you would have opened regardless is a genuine head start, and any profit you pull out of it is real. The mistake is depositing more than you planned, or trading more than you are comfortable with, just to unlock credit you did not need. Treat it as a small bonus on top of a decision you already made, never as the reason for the decision.
On every exchange we track, we label the bonus type in plain sight so you know before you sign up whether you are getting cash or credit. Compare them on the leaderboard and read the individual reviews for the exact conditions.
