What Is Leverage in Crypto? A Simple Guide
Leverage is the reason crypto futures are thrilling, and the reason most people blow up. It sits behind every giant welcome bonus and every screenshot of an account going to zero. Here is what it actually does, in plain terms, and how to use it without wrecking yourself.
How leverage works
Leverage lets you control a bigger position than your deposit. At 10x, $100 of margin controls a $1,000 position. A 10% move your way doubles your money; a 10% move against you wipes out the margin and triggers liquidation, where the exchange closes the position to stop the loss going further.
The higher the leverage, the smaller the move needed to liquidate you. That is the whole reason beginners lose money fastest at high leverage.
Liquidation and how to avoid it
To keep leverage from ending your account early:
- •Use low leverage (2x, 5x) until you understand the mechanics
- •Always set a stop-loss before entering a trade
- •Never risk more than a small percentage of your balance per trade
- •Watch your liquidation price, not just your entry
Respect it or lose to it
Leverage is a tool, not a shortcut to getting rich. In small, controlled doses it lets experienced traders do more with less capital. Cranked up, it is the quickest way to lose everything you put in. Learn on a tiny scale, size every position so one bad trade cannot end you, and never trade money you cannot afford to lose.
